Stories: I am a First Generation
Hussein Mohamed
Hello everyone, I'm Hussein, and I began my journey at Brandeis as a mid-year student. I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Politics, complemented by my involvement in the Gen One Network.
Being a first-generation student at Brandeis has its challenges, but the Gen One Network has been instrumental in connecting me with mentors and hosting invaluable academic events. These resources have significantly supported my academic growth and integration into university life. Throughout my time at Brandeis, I've had the opportunity to present on several academic platforms, including my presentation on Electric Vehicles for a Business Fundamentals course. These experiences have enhanced my presentation skills and deepened my understanding of global market trends.
One project that stands out is a coding project I collaborated on during my first computer science course, Introduction to Python. This project not only expanded my technological knowledge but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in academic pursuits. Another project I worked on is a research project for a Basic Statistics for Social and Political Analysis course, where I analyzed social science literature and datasets using Stata, which honed my quantitative and data analysis skills. My approach to life and academics revolves around diligence, perseverance, and utilizing available resources such as the University Writing Center, Academic Services, and the Hiatt Career Center. These resources have been crucial in shaping my academic and professional journey.
Being a first-generation student has profoundly influenced my personal and academic achievements, shaping my determination and resilience in pursuing my goals. I'm actively involved on campus, balancing my studies with my current part-time work as an Information and Borrowing Assistant at the Brandeis Library. Previously, I worked as a Research Lab Assistant in the Biology Department. Outside of academics, I'm passionate about soccer and volunteer with Brandeis Habitat for Humanity.
As a first-generation student, I prioritize fostering a supportive environment for fellow students. Understanding and appreciating diverse experiences is key to building a more inclusive community at Brandeis. Looking ahead, my goal within the next five years is to embark on a fulfilling professional career upon graduation from Brandeis University in May 2025.
To my fellow community members, I encourage you to stay focused on your goals, manage your time effectively, and actively participate in community service opportunities.
