Password Management (LastPass)
LastPass is a password manager that makes it easy to log in to any website or app. It provides a secure vault where you can save all your login info (username and password). When you visit websites, LastPass can automatically fill in your credentials for you. It also makes it easy to generate secure, unique passwords for every site you use. Overview
Approximately 81% of security breaches are caused by weak or reused passwords. The easiest way to protect an individual's information online is to have unique, strong passwords for every account. But it's impossible to remember all of those credentials, so many people tend to reuse passwords for many sites and write them down. These practices can mean a single security breach for one website affects many more accounts for an individual reusing passwords. Using a password manager can help improve security by allowing users to easily create unique, strong passwords for every site they use.
Benefits
Most people talk about banking information, Social Security numbers, identity theft, the works. And all of that's true. People can absolutely get to that information and pretend to be you if you have insecure, easily guessable passwords. But it's not just that. You have a lot of personal data you keep on so many devices and services even if you don't realize it. Password strength is a huge step in keeping your personal data and account information safe and secure. In addition, you can access LastPass from anywhere — desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet; your account is backed up and synced everywhere you need to work.
Getting Started
How to enroll
LastPass Enterprise
Faculty and staff can enroll in LastPass for work-related accounts. To enroll, visit the LastPass Enterprise enrollment page. Within 24 hours of enabling the service, you will receive a "Welcome" email from LastPass to complete the registration process for LastPass Enterprise.
LastPass Premium
Faculty, staff and students can enroll in LastPass Premium for personal use (non work-related accounts). To enroll, visit the LastPass Premium enrollment webpage. Enter your Brandeis email address in the first field, and the email address you want to use to login to LastPass in the second field. This can be any address of your choosing.
Setting up your account
Once you've signed up for an account, you'll receive an email confirmation to your Brandeis email address. Click the link in that email to finish setting up your account and create a long password or passphrase (suggestion: think of a sentence!) to use as your master password.
Note: Your master password must be unique and not used on any other websites stored in your LastPass Vault. LastPass will prompt you to change your master password if it detects that it's a duplicate.
On-the-Go
You can download the accompanying Last Pass browser extension or mobile app. That's how LastPass can automatically fill in your passwords any time you get to a login page — whether it be the Brandeis login page, financial institution or other accounts. You just need to log in to LastPass, and you're good to go.

What else can LastPass do?
LastPass definitely helps out with password security, but beyond that it offers some quality of life and convenience factors, like the ones below.
- You can securely store your credit card information and auto-fill it into forms requesting it like amazon checkout.
- You can also store your addresses and automatically fill in billing or shipping information.
- The same goes for banking information — safely save account numbers, routing numbers as secure notes.
- If you have some sensitive notes you’ve taken and don’t want anyone to see, you can store them in LastPass as well.
- You can even store WiFi passwords, thanks to Premium!

LastPass is a password management tool — it simplifies your online life by remembering your passwords for you. With LastPass to manage your logins, it's easy to have a strong, unique password for every online account and improve your online security.
There are many reasons why you should consider using a password manager like LastPass:
- Convenient. You only need to remember one master password to access all your online accounts — LastPass remembers all your account passwords for you.
- Secure. LastPass encrypts all your passwords. It never has the key to your encrypted data, so your information is available to you, and only you. Your vault is encrypted with bank-level, AES 256-bit encryption.
- Device and platform independent. You can use your account passwords on any platform or device — Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and on the web (LastPass website).
- Changes synced. Any changes you make to account passwords are synced to each device and platform on which you have LastPass installed. So if you change an account password on your Mac, LastPass will sync your change on your iPhone.
- Widely used. LastPass is used by many organizations, including higher education institutions, corporations and non-profits, as well by millions of individuals.
- Free. LastPass is free for anyone (students, faculty and staff) at Brandeis with an active @brandeis.edu email address. (If you already have a LastPass Premium account, you can convert that account to a free Brandeis LastPass Premium account.)
With LastPass, you no longer have to use the same password for various sites or accounts. No more writing down passwords on little pieces of paper. LastPass can create and manage passwords for you. You also no longer have to store passwords in your browser. In addition, LastPass uses the same encryption algorithm that the U.S. government uses for top-secret data. Your encrypted data is unreadable to LastPass and to everyone else without the master password.
Brandeis University provides LastPass Personal Premium to all members of the Brandeis community for personal use. Employees are encouraged to use LastPass Enterprise for their work-related accounts.

A password manager is a service that remembers your passwords, so you don't have to. Your passwords are kept in a vault.
LastPass is your key and it doesn't leave your pocket. It encrypts and decrypts your data locally on your machine, and can't open your vault without you. LastPass syncs everywhere with support for all browsers, operating systems and mobile devices
Once you have your LastPass account, install the browser plug-in and sign in. When you login to websites, LastPass will prompt you to save your password to your LastPass Vault. The next time you try to login to that site, LastPass will automatically fill in your username and password. LastPass can even generate secure passwords for any new sites you sign up for, so you no longer need to remember passwords and don't need to go through the hassle of thinking of a new password for each site.
Yes! If you’re already a LastPass user, you're eligible to use LastPass Premium on your personal account. Go to LastPass Premium enrollment page and enter your Brandeis email address in the first field, and the email address of your personal LastPass account in the second field. You'll get a confirmation email with steps to take to upgrade your personal account to LastPass Premium. Please see LastPass Premium documentation for complete instructions on setting up a premium account for personal use.
The LastPass Vault is where all of your passwords, notes and items are stored; it is easily accessible in the left navigation. Your Vault is a locally hosted file, so you can access your stored data securely and quickly. You can organize your Vault view by folders, move or manage items in bulk, and manage your user account. Watch the video to meet your LastPass Vault.
You can add new items to your Vault to easily fill online web forms, including addresses, payment cards, bank accounts, health insurance policies and much more. Learn more about adding and managing items.
You can add a new username and password while logging in to a website, saving manually or adding directly within your Vault. Learn more about adding new passwords.
One of the great time-saving benefits of LastPass is that it remembers your passwords. When you visit a site to log in, LastPass fills the credentials for you — no typing required! You can add, edit, delete and share the passwords stored in your Vault. Learn more about managing site passwords.
The most secure passwords are randomly generated, and LastPass can be used to both store and generate them. It is recommended to use generated passwords as much as possible as a security best practice. Learn more about generating passwords.
You can organize your LastPass Vault so you can easily find what you're looking for — you can create folders and/or sub-folders, then move your items into them to be stored. Learn how to add or delete folders.
When you leave Brandeis, you will no longer have access to LastPass Enterprise (for work-related accounts). However, if you are using a LastPass Premium account, you may continue to do so even after leaving Brandeis.
