Get Involved - It's Easy!
Brandeis University is participating in Data Privacy Week, a global initiative emphasizing the importance of safeguarding personal information. The Office of Information Security is hosting fun and informative events all week from January 27 - 31, 2025. From simple every day habits to fun contests, there are many ways to participate in Data Privacy Week - take action and learn how to protect yourself online.
Exciting Activities for Data Privacy Week:
Day 1: Data Privacy in Everyday Life
Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Start Data Privacy Week by making small changes in your daily routine to improve your data security. Here are some simply steps you can take:
- Enable multi-factory authentication (MFA) on your accounts for added security.
- Review the permissions for your apps - does that app really need access to your location or contacts?
- Use a password manager to generate and store secure unique passwords for each of your accounts
Day 2: Take the Data Privacy Self-Assessment
Date: Any time on Wednesday, January 29, 2025
How much do you really know about data privacy? Take the Data Privacy Self-Assessement and test your knowledge. In a 2022 survey, only 48% of users knew how to keep their data safe online. How do you measure up?
Day 3: Cybersecurity Meme Contest
Date: Thursday, January 30, 2025
Got a sense of humor and a creative spirit? Enter the Cybersecurity Meme Contest! Create a meme about online safety, phishing or scams. Show off your creativity and you could win a fantastic prize.
- Submit your meme anytime between Monday, January 27th and Friday, January 31st.
- The most creative and informative memes will be featured on the ITS News and the winner will receive a prize.
Submit your meme by email with your entry attached and get ready to spread some cyber humor!
Day 4: Digital Clean-Up Day
Date: Friday, January 31, 2025
Wrap up Data Privacy Week by decluttering your digital life. Take a few minutes to:
- Delete unused accounts and apps that may be storing your data.
- Secure old devices or wipe them before disposing of them.
- Review and update your privacy settings on your social media and other accounts.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month!
It is an international initiative that highlights actions everyone can take to stay safe online. The theme for this year is “Secure Our World”, empowering everyone to understand simple ways to protect yourself, your family and your business from online threats. In observance of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the ITS Security Office will be providing free seminars, information booths and even offering rewards through fun activities. A small amount of knowledge can go a long way in repelling cyber attacks. Join us at one of our events and learn what you can do to protect yourself and how to respond in the event that you are targeted by things like email, scams or malicious software.
