Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics is transitioning from Universal Analytics (UA) to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). UA will stop processing data on July 1, 2023.

GA4 focuses on user engagement. It measures events, or user interactions with a website. It also tracks users across devices (e.g., between a computer and a cell phone).

Reporting

In GA4, most of the reports from UA have been replaced or renamed. Below are some changes that you might notice.

  • Pageviews are now Views.
    • There is no longer a Content Drilldown option, so to determine the views for a page, click Engagement → Pages and Screens. Then in the Search box, search for the root of your site (e.g., "/english/" or "/student-engagement/"). This will pull up all pages with that root.

  • Unique pageviews are no longer available.
  • There is no bounce rate in GA4. Instead, GA4 shows a new metric called "Engaged sessions per user," which shows how many people interacted with your content.
