Genesis Cedeno

Major/minor: Psychology and Neuroscience

Study abroad program: Study in Buenos Aires (IFSA), Spring 2025

Reason you chose this program: The courses were one of the biggest reasons why I chose this program. I was afraid of having to have 2 semesters worth of 5 courses after returning from Study Abroad to graduate, but knowing that these courses would contribute to my major requirements helped ease my nerves. Additionally, I knew for sure that I wanted to go to South America/a Spanish-speaking country to Argentina was perfect.

Favorite classes: My favorite class was actually a non-science course titled "Sports and Identity in Argentina." We discussed the history and impact sports have on Argentine culture, which I found very interesting and engaging. The presentations and coursework were fun to complete and the professor was a delight.

How did you incorporate your Brandeis areas of study into your study abroad experience? I was well prepared for the content and rigor of my abroad courses

What were some parts of your identity that you thought about while considering study abroad? I am a Black Latina, and considering that Argentina is regarded as less diverse than other countries, I was concerned about how I'd be treated/perceived. However, I can say that I did not receive any negative treatment for my identity as a Black person. I was stared at a LOT, but after a while, you get very used to it and I don't necessarily believe that most of that staring had to do with my race. I did experience some uncomfortable interactions based off my gender. Many of the men were very forward (especially in clubs/bars) and it was not something I was used to - but again, it becomes normalized for you after a while.

Favorite memory: My favorite memory was going on a 16 mile hike in Bariloche, Argentina with my abroad friends. I love being outdoors, but I don't have much experience, so this was a wonderful time, and I learned so much about myself and my friends. We really bonded and I connected with nature immensely. The views were incredible, and I felt like I was part of something larger than myself.

Did you apply for any scholarships? Which ones, and how did they impact your time abroad? I applied for the IFSA First-Generation scholarship and was accepted. This scholarship paid for my roundtrip flight to Argentina, my passport renewal fees, and my student visa, which relieved a lot of financial stress and made the preparation way easier.

Fact about Argentina that you think people would be surprised to learn: Pedestrians do NOT have the right of way.

“I learned so much about myself and my friends [on a long hike]. We really bonded and I connected with nature immensely. The views were incredible, and I felt like I was part of something larger than myself.”
