Program Overview

The Brandeis in Heredia program is an intensive two-course summer program that offers a rigorous academic experience with a focus on ecology and conservation, immersing students in the country's renowned environmental initiatives. Classroom learning in the city of Heredia is combined with field excursions throughout Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems, including cloud forests, coastal reserves, and national parks. These hands-on experiences provide students with direct exposure to conservation efforts, sustainable practices, and Costa Rica's progressive environmental policies. By engaging with local communities, researchers, and conservationists, participants develop a deep understansing of how Costa Rica balances economic growth with environmental stewardship, making it a global leader in sustainability.

The program is located in the suburb of Heredia and based at Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA). The city is filled with history, sustainable initiatives, and opportunities to experience the unique culture of Costa Rica.

All students will also take a brief Spanish language course.

Academic Partner

The program is a collaborative partnership between Brandeis University and the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA), a non-profit study abroad provider founded in 1988 and now offering study abroad opportunities in 19 countries across the globe. The program consists of two courses taught in English — one course taught by a Brandeis faculty member and one course with a local professor from Universidad Nacional.
