Office of Study Abroad

Caroline Swan

Major/minor: Business and Economics with a Hispanic Studies minor

Year abroad: Brandeis in Copenhagen, Summer 2021

Reason you chose this program: I wanted to be able to study abroad without having to commit to a full semester.

Favorite classes: Behavioral Economics

How did your incorporate your Brandeis areas of study into your study abroad experience? We were able to learn about the specific Danish, Scandinavian and European applications of the economic, financial and behavioral concepts we learned in class and contrast these with the ones we were familiar with at home, in the U.S. financial system.

Housing situation: Apartment style

What were some parts of your identity that you took into consideration while studying abroad and about which other students may want to talk to you? I am an athlete, and I had to be sure that I could prepare for a quick turnaround after abroad, going into my soccer preseason. I made sure I could find a gym, a field to play on and a few teams to practice with.

Best memory: Spontaneously bungee jumping at sunset on the canals.

Greatest challenge: Finding an appropriate wardrobe for the cultural norms.

What you know now that you didn't know before: Denmark is actually a utopia. It is perfect.

Fact about Denmark that you think people would be surprised to learn: The society has such a flat structure that nobody uses formal pronouns to address one another. You only ever use "Mr." and "Mrs." when addressing royalty.

“I am an athlete and I had to be sure that I could be able to prepare for a quick turnaround after abroad, going into my soccer preseason.”
