Receiving Credit in Anthropology

Students wishing to receive credit in ANTH for coursework done off-campus during the academic year should discuss these plans with the Study Abroad Liaison. Students hoping to earn credit abroad toward their ANTH major should confirm with the ANTH department prior to departing abroad how courses may or may not be able to count. The link above is a list of already pre-reviewed courses and how they can count toward the ANTH major/minor. Upon return, semester students should complete the Petition to Request Substitution for a Requirement form for final and formal review.

Study Abroad Liaison

To assist students with their academic choices abroad and to help answer any questions about receiving major/minor credit while abroad, each academic department and program has assigned a faculty member to serve as the Study Abroad Liaison. Can I receive Anthropology credit for courses taken overseas?

We welcome and encourage students to pursue Study Abroad opportunities. Students often
receive anthropology credit for one or more courses taken abroad, but please remember that a minimum of five of the nine courses required for the major must be taken from Brandeis
anthropology faculty. Except in unusual circumstances, ANTH 1a and 5a (or 7a) must be taken at Brandeis. Finally, the foundational literacy courses (writing intensive, oral communication, and digital literacy) also may not be fulfilled by study abroad courses, but must be taken at Brandeis.

Is it possible to take one of the "core" Anthropology courses abroad?

We encourage students to take their core courses at Brandeis. In particular, for those contemplating study abroad, it is strongly recommended that they take their core courses before going abroad. In the special case of someone who begins the major late, permission is sometimes given to take one (but only one) of the core courses abroad.
