Journalism
There are some great options around the world for Journalism minors to study abroad. This page contains information that will assist Journalism minors in determining how to integrate study abroad into their Brandeis careers.
Sample of Approved Programs with Journalism Course Work
Visit the Brandeis Approved Programs List to review a comprehensive list of programs that offer Journalism coursework. There you can filter options to search for unique program traits like internships or research. Additional programs might have acceptable coursework, but this list shows the primary locations where Journalism courses may be available.
Study Abroad Liaison
To assist students with their academic choices abroad and to help answer any questions about receiving major/minor credit while abroad, each academic department and program has assigned a faculty member to serve as the Study Abroad Liaison. As every department has different policies regarding credit from abroad, the Study Abroad Liaison can assist you with guidance on major/minor credit.

Requesting Credit in Journalism
Students wishing to receive credit in Journalism for coursework done off-campus during the academic year should discuss these plans with the Study Abroad Liaison. All students as part of their application process for either a summer or semester term abroad will be required to have a course proposal reviewed by the department if they wish to receive credit in that major/minor. For the semester, this is an initial conversation and students should continue to discuss plans with the department as they have more course information (syllabi, etc.). For the summer, courses are pre-approved. Upon return, semester students should complete the
Petition to Request Substitution for a Requirement form for final and formal review.

Yes, provided the course focuses on the history and/or practice of journalism, advertising, or public relations, or on the laws and theories that animate the fields of communications and media studies, you can receive elective credit for an overseas course. Students, however, can receive overseas transfer credit for no more than three of the six courses required in the journalism program.
Students are encouraged to take their journalism core-courses at Brandeis. If, however, a student has taken a journalism course overseas that he or she believes is a good match for a core course offered at Brandeis, the program director will review the course's syllabus and the student's assignments and make a determination about transfer credit. Students wishing to apply for core-course transfer credit are encouraged, therefore, to save their syllabi and assignments.
Yes. A number of the study abroad programs approved by Brandeis offer journalism internship opportunities that include a formal course, and students can take such a course in lieu of JOUR 89a. A list of programs with approved internship courses is available under the "Sample Programs" heading of the journalism page on the study abroad website. Students should not feel, however, that they cannot do an internship abroad unless the program they are in offers a formal course. Provided the internship does not interfere with a student's studies, and that the student has gotten approval for the internship from the journalism program director beforehand, any internship completed abroad can be applied toward the journalism minor. Students who have not taken a course abroad, though, will have to complete JOUR 89a upon their return to Brandeis. The "Sample Programs" heading includes a list of study abroad programs that do not offer formal, internship courses, but are housed at universities that do offer assistance in finding internships - and are located in cities that have English-language newspapers or other media outlets.
