Schedule

The program is an intensive program on which students should expect to spend 35-40 hours per week researching in the lab. Students will work on their assigned project in collaboration with their faculty mentor and should expect to work both as a team and independently over the course of their time in San Juan. Students are expected to show up to work punctually each day and stay until the work day has ended.

Students will participate in the 2-credit Oral Communication course remotely via Zoom. Students should plan to spend 2 hours per week together as a group in the UPR classroom for this course. This course will have out of classroom work and assessments.

In the beginning of the program, there will be an on-site orientation that will help familiarize students to the unique setting of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and introduce students to basic aspects of Spanish language and culture. This orientation will last two to three days and will include a walking tour of San Juan, an overview of basic information about living in San Juan, such as grocery shopping and public transportation, and other important information. Important discussions will also be had regarding academic expectations for the program and health and safety protocols for individuals and the group.

Brandeis will arrange two day-long weekend excursions within Puerto Rico for the group to experience various parts of the island. These excursions may include a visit to El Yunque, a biolumniscent bay, and other natural and culturally-significant opportunities. Exact excursions will be confirmed prior to the start of the program.
