Why study abroad in Puerto Rico?
Studying in Puerto Rico offers a unique blend of cultural richness, academic opportunities, and an unparalleled environment that makes it a compelling destination for higher education. On this unique program, students will benefit from Brandeis University's connection with the University of Puerto Rico to participate in hands-on lab research under the guidance of faculty mentors. By studying on this program, students will have access to unique labwork being conducted at UPR and a supportive environment in which to channel their academic and post-graduate pursuits.
What is the academic focus in Puerto Rico?
Brandeis in Puerto Rico is an intensive summer program focused on STEM lab research at the University of Puerto Rico. Students will earn 8 credits for their work over the course of the two month program.
The program is conducted in English and is a collaborative academic program between Brandeis University and the University of Puerto Rico.
Does the Brandeis program operate only in the summer?
Yes, the program runs from early June to early August. Students wishing to go to Puerto Rico during the academic year should meet with a member of the study abroad staff to discuss other options.
Where will I live?
You will be placed in dormitories on the Polytechnic University campus. More information is available on the Student Life page.
What is the deadline for studying abroad in the summer?
The application deadline typically falls in mid-February but interested students are encouraged to apply early. With rolling admissions, applications are reviewed up until the deadline as long as space is available. This program is expected to be competitive and will accept to a waitlist once spots have filled.
Are Brandeis faculty involved in teaching in San Juan?
The program and its coursework are designed and supervised by Brandeis faculty. Daily research will be conducted under the supervision of research mentors at the University of Puerto Rico. A Brandeis professor will teach the 2 credit Oral Communication course.
How do the classes taught in Puerto Rico count for my Brandeis degree?
All courses are Brandeis courses and appear on transcripts as graded Brandeis coursework, not transfer credit.
Credits are applied automatically upon completion of your program evaluation. This program evaluation is mandatory and credit will not be applied until it has been completed.
